Dorothy Carner is the head of the journalism libraries at the Missouri School of Journalism. She oversees both the Frank L. Martin Journalism Library and the Columbia Missourian Newspaper Library.
For 11 years, Carner served as the business librarian at the University of Texas-Austin McCombs School of Business, a top-20 business school with more than 6,000 students. During this time she also served as a reference librarian at the Perry Castañeda Library, University of Texas-Austin, one of the largest academic libraries in the world.
Carner earned a master's degree in library and information sciences from the University of Texas-Austin and bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Missouri State University. Before reinventing herself as a librarian, Carner taught life science in secondary schools, a small parochial college and a school of nursing. She has served as an officer in two small financial/marketing businesses: Carner and Associates and Carner Information.
Since arriving in Columbia, Carner has been busy transforming several library print resources to their online counterparts to better serve a more mobile and online constituency. She has been active in redesigning the new journalism library space into a high-tech, inviting collaborative space where the community, media and the academy can meet. She is currently collaborating with other RJI staff to bring an e-content/e-reading symposium to campus and working on the design and implementation of a 24/7 information Web site for journalists.
