2009 APME Conference
Oct. 28-30, 2009
RJI sponsors "Breakfast and Bright Ideas," Ken Fleming featured in Online Credibility Panel, and Missouri School of Journalism students report from the conference
On Oct. 28-30, Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellows and staff, along with selected MU journalism students, traveled to the 2009 Associated Press Managing Editors (APME) Conference in St. Louis, Mo.
Breakfast and Bright Ideas
As a conference sponsor, RJI treated APME participants to a “Breakfast and Bright Ideas” discussion. Reynolds Fellows Michael Skolar, Clyde Bentley, Michele McLellan and Jacqui Banaszynski, along with Mike McKean, director of the RJI Futures Lab, joined RJI Executive Director Pam Johnson in a presentation on the ideas and projects that are taking place at RJI.
Student Reporters
In addition, RJI helped coordinate 11 MU journalism students who attended the APME conference as convention reporters. With the guidance of MU journalism faculty members Jake Sherlock and Jeanne Abbott, the students spent three days reporting on each presentation and event at the conference. This valuable experience allowed the students to work with some of the top newspaper editors in the country.
Ken Fleming, panelist: Building Online Credibility
Two of six newsrooms that participated in APME’s Online Credibility Project shared their results at this panel discussion sponsored by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. Chris Cobler, editor of the the Victoria (Texas) Advocated, talked about how readers view the credibility of user-generated vs. newsroom-generated content. Kathy English, public editor at the Toronto Star, described the “long tail” of archived stories and how newsrooms are handling requests to “unpublish” articles. Ken Fleming, director of RJI’s Center for Advanced Social Research has conducted several online credibility studies and advised the newsrooms on this project. Elaine Kramer, Online Journalism Credibility Project manager moderated the panel discussion.
