During the morning explore new solutions to the industry's most pressing challenges and discuss next steps with RJI's six 2008-2009 Donald W. Reynolds Fellows and Roger Fidler, RJI's program director for digital publishing.  The afternoon will focus on the high tech jobs that are transforming journalism and driving economic growth.

What do audiences want

  •  YAYA: Dr. Margaret Duffy explores the Youth and Young   Adult market — their influence, their use of technology, their sense of entitlement and more.
  • How to get paid for journalism on the Web? Bill Densmore gives an update on changing ways and means.
  • Will E-Readers save newspapers? The industry is finally waking up to the possibility of electronic paper displays. Find out where we’re headed from Roger Fidler who is helping to chart the course.

Journalism’s eternal values in the new age

  • Discussion leader: Mike Fancher, former executive editor of The Seattle Times under whose leadership the paper won multiple Pulitzers.

New ways of gathering and delivering news

• Journalism has entered an age of information overload. Matt Thompson wants to weave the mess of disconnected headlines into a coherent, compelling structure and will present a demo site.
 
Jane Stevens, who set out to develop news “shells” created a virtual entrepreneurial-journalism inclubator and a template for niche networks. She'll demo the RJI Collaboratory and a new local health social/news/information network. 

• Multimedia, Multi-Platform News Hub: an update from Jen Reeves on the challenge of integrating multiple newsrooms.

12 – 1:15 lunch

1:15 – 2:45 Fred W. Smith Forum
“And the winners are...” Last September 70 Mizzou students started the competition to develop, test and market native iPhone apps. Meet the interdisciplinary teams that made it to the Final Four and find out which team will win the grand prize — a trip to Apple’s 2009 Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco. And which team will win the coveted People’s Choice award — the right to keep the iPhones! Mike McKean, director of the Futures Lab and professor at the Missouri School of Journalism will moderate as students demo their apps and discuss what they learned.

2:45 – 3:30 Fred W. Smith Forum
University legal and business experts discuss the opportunities and challenges supporting the development of intellectual property by students, faculty and staff.  RJI Director of Program Development Roger Gafke moderates as the panel considers how best to guide multiple departments, a non-profit entity and commercial partners through complex contractual requirements.

Break, opportunity to meet one-on-one with iPhone student teams

4 – 5:15 Fred W. Smith Forum
University of Missouri President Gary Forsee moderates a panel of business leaders discussing how the RJI iPhone competition can be a model for economic development partnerships.

John Forcucci, the IT Director of Business Solutions/News for The Boston Globe will initiate an open discussion about forming an e-reader consortium to develop editorial and advertising standards for digital newspapers.
